Slugging: A New Old-Fashioned Remedy
Despite the ever-present rain and snow, the winter months can be devastating for dry skin. Even with your normal moisturizing routine, you might be desperate for hydration—so desperate, in fact, that you might be tempted to slather on as much product as you possibly can.
There might be something to that.
Referred to as “slugging,” this viral new beauty trend actually has historical roots. (Remember that marvelous scene with your favorite fictional ‘60s comedienne applying cold cream?) The process is simple:
- Follow your normal nightly routine.
- Add a layer of petrolatum (or petroleum jelly) on top as if applying lotion.
- Wash it off the next morning to reveal your positively glowing skin.
Dr. Julia Carroll recently talked to Today’s Parent Magazine about the new trend. She explains that the petrolatum seals in the active ingredients of your other treatments and reduces “trans-epidermal water loss” by up to 99%. Petroleum doesn’t clog pores, so even those with oily skin can benefit from occasional slugging. Plus, it’s so powerful that it can boost any product you apply underneath it!
We recommend using Alastin recovery balm, although simple petroleum jelly works too. If you want to give your skin a boost this winter—and bring out your skin’s natural glowing goodness—give slugging a try.
