Microneedling Toronto
Collagen Induction Therapy
Microneedling is an effective tool for skin rejuvenation and scar treatment in all skin types.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, triggers the skin’s healing response, leading to the production of new collagen.

As dermatologists, we have in-depth knowledge of the skin and its structure. This allows us to precisely tailor your microneedling treatments to achieve optimal results.
Microneedling results in significant improvements in wrinkles, scars and stretch marks with minimal recovery time. It is a safe and well-tolerated procedure that is appropriate for all skin types.
The results of microneedling treatments appear gradually. Over the weeks and months following their treatments, patients notice smoother, firmer skin.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling works by creating a number of micro-injuries in the top layers of skin with extremely fine needles. This stimulates the fibroblasts in your skin to increase production of collagen. The increased collagen plumps the skin, smoothing out wrinkles and scars.
While the face is the most commonly treated area, you can also target areas on the body, including the:
- décolletage
- arms
- abdomen
- legs
Collagen Boost
Tiny needles create micro-channels in the skin, triggering natural healing to produce more collagen and elastin for smoother, firmer texture.
Versatile Treatment
Addresses acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, and stretch marks.
Minimal Downtime
Gentle procedure that allows for a quick return to routine while improving skin over weeks and months.
Who is a Candidate for Microneedling?
In general, microneedling may be a good choice for you if:
- You want to treat specific aesthetic issues: fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, stretch marks and scars.
- You want to maintain youthful, firm skin.
This procedure is our go-to for treatment of lip lines and aging of the lower eyelids. Combination treatments featuring microneedling, laser, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), and skin-plumping hyaluronic acid dermal fillers provide optimal results.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Microneedling
The treatment begins with a thorough cleansing of the area to be treated. Topical numbing cream is applied to improve your comfort.
The SkinPen is gently passed over the target area. The SkinPen microneedling device features a unique needle cartridge and handle design to ensure a sterile environment. The depth of needle penetration is individualized for the patient and area treated.
Each session lasts about 30 minutes and patients typically experience one to two days of mild redness.
Microneedling has been shown to optimize the effectiveness of topically applied skincare products by increasing absorption. For this reason, you’ll receive a complete set of instructions on how to care for your skin following your treatment. This will include a customized skincare regimen based on pharmaceutical grade products containing essential active ingredients to enhance your recovery and results.
Following your microneedling treatment you are able to return to your normal daily activities immediately. A series of 3-6 treatments at monthly intervals is typically recommended.
In the months following your microneedling treatments, the production of collagen within your skin is stimulated. Fine lines and wrinkles smooth out and scars become less noticeable.
What is Collagen Induction Therapy
Microneedling operates on a principle called collagen induction therapy (CIT), a therapeutic concept that harnesses your body's natural regenerative power to create genuinely transformative skin improvements.
Collagen induction therapy emerged from a fascinating intersection of dermatological research and clinical observation. In the mid-1990s, dermatologists began exploring how controlled micro-trauma to skin could stimulate therapeutic benefits rather than causing damage. Early pioneers noticed that various forms of controlled injury, from manual needling to roller-based devices, consistently triggered improved skin texture and appearance. However, these early techniques were inconsistent and difficult to control.
The breakthrough came with the development of precision microneedling devices that could deliver extremely fine needles at controlled depths. This allowed doctors to harness the power of collagen induction while minimizing visible trauma. The SkinPen represents the evolution of these techniques into an FDA-cleared, medically validated device that makes collagen induction therapy precise, reproducible, and remarkably safe.
Understanding the Collagen Induction Mechanism
Collagen induction therapy is about administering controlled micro-injuries to signal the skin to initiate its natural healing response, resulting in enhanced collagen and elastin production.
When microneedling creates microscopic punctures in the deeper layer of skin, several biological processes activate simultaneously:
Inflammatory Response: The micro-injuries trigger an immediate inflammatory response. While "inflammation" sounds negative, this carefully controlled inflammation is therapeutic. It signals fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) that the area needs repair and rebuilding.
Growth Factor Release: The injury initiates the release of growth factors. These growth factors essentially tell your skin cells, "It's time to produce new collagen."
Collagen Remodelling: Over the following weeks and months, your fibroblasts respond to these growth factors by synthesizing new type I and type III collagen fibres. This new collagen provides structural support, plumps the skin from within, and smooths wrinkles and scars.
Neocollagenesis: This term describes the formation of new, organized collagen. Unlike the disorganized scar tissue formed by traumatic injury, the collagen produced through CIT is organized and functionally similar to your skin's original collagen architecture.
Collagen induction therapy works with your body's biology. You're not fighting against your skin's nature; you're directing its inherent regenerative capacity. This is why results continue improving for months after treatment, as collagen remodelling progresses.
The SkinPen Difference
Not all microneedling devices are equally effective. The marketplace includes everything from at-home dermarollers to various medical-grade systems, and the differences in efficacy are substantial.
Precision and Control
The SkinPen features motorized, reciprocating needles that move at precisely controlled speeds and depths. Each treatment is consistent and reproducible, something impossible with manual techniques. The depth of the needle can be adjusted based on the area treated and individual skin thickness, ensuring optimal collagen induction without excessive trauma.
Sterility and Safety
The SkinPen uses single-use, sterile needle cartridges, which is a critical safety feature.
Efficacy Data
Clinical studies on the SkinPen demonstrate consistent, significant improvements in wrinkles, scars, and skin texture. For example, 94% of patients noticed an improvement in their neck wrinkles just a month after treatment, while 80% experienced an improvement in acne scars in the same time frame.
Professional Guidance
When you undergo microneedling at Compass Dermatology, our dermatologist-led team will customize treatment based on your specific concerns, skin type, and healing capacity. At-home treatments lack this personalization and professional oversight, significantly reducing efficacy and increasing complication risks.
How Microneedling Complements Other Aesthetic Treatments
One of microneedling's greatest strengths is how seamlessly it integrates into comprehensive aesthetic treatment plans.
Dermal Fillers and Botox: While injectables address specific volume loss and dynamic wrinkles, microneedling improves overall skin quality, texture, and firmness to create a synergistic combination. Injectables restore structure while microneedling enhances the foundation, resulting in more natural-appearing, comprehensive rejuvenation.
Laser Treatments: Microneedling pairs exceptionally well with laser therapies. Many patients schedule microneedling sessions between laser treatments to maintain improvement, or use them strategically to enhance results. The combination addresses both superficial concerns and deeper structural concerns.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): When PRP is applied immediately after microneedling, the microchannels created by needling allow PRP to penetrate deeply, amplifying the benefits of both treatments.
Skincare Products: One often-overlooked benefit of microneedling is that it dramatically enhances topical product absorption. The microchannels created during treatment allow medical-grade skincare products to penetrate far more effectively. This is why your post-treatment skincare regimen is crucial. Pharmaceutical-grade serums and recovery products applied immediately after treatment deliver enhanced therapeutic benefits.
