What are Spider Veins?

Known medically as telangiectasias, spider veins consist of narrow, expanded blood vessels located just beneath the skin, forming noticeable red, blue, or purple lines that mimic spider webs or branching trees. These slender structures, usually under 1 mm wide, are swollen capillaries or small veins that stay irreversibly widened. In contrast to working vessels that aid blood flow, spider veins pose purely aesthetic issues and offer no practical benefit.

Spider vein formation results from multiple interacting factors, with genetics playing a substantial role.

Hormonal influences trigger the development of spider veins, particularly in women. This hormonal component explains why women develop spider veins far more frequently than men.

Age contributes progressively to the formation of spider veins. Over decades, the structural integrity of small blood vessels deteriorates. Vessel walls lose elasticity, valves weaken, and capillaries dilate more readily. This cumulative degradation is why spider veins become increasingly prevalent with each passing decade.

Prolonged standing or sitting impairs venous return, creating pressure in leg veins that can cause smaller vessels to dilate permanently. That's why jobs that require hours of being stationary are associated with a higher rate of spider vein development.

Sun exposure directly damages facial blood vessels by weakening their walls and triggering dilation. Areas that are commonly exposed, such as the nose and cheeks, are particularly affected.

How Laser Treatment Eliminates Spider Veins

Laser treatment works through selective photothermolysis, using specific light wavelengths that target hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells) while sparing surrounding tissue. When laser energy penetrates the skin, it's preferentially absorbed by hemoglobin within the spider vein. This absorbed energy converts to heat, raising the temperature of the blood within the vessel.

The heat causes the vessel walls to coagulate and collapse. The damaged vessel is no longer functional, and over the following weeks to months, your body's natural processes reabsorb and eliminate the collapsed vessel tissue. Any blood that would have flowed through the spider vein harmlessly reroutes through nearby healthy vessels.
