Coolsculpting® Toronto
Reduce Unwanted Fat Under the Chin
Despite watching our diet and exercising, many of us have stubborn deposits of fat that frustrate us. That’s why many patients turn to Coolsculpting, a non-invasive body contouring procedure that safely and permanently removes fat.
What is CoolSculpting?
Coolsculpting is a non-invasive treatment to permanently reduce unwanted fat (how cool is that?). Treatment areas include the area under the chin, the abdomen, upper arms, flanks (love handles), and inner and outer thighs. A suction applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to specifically target fat cells without affecting the overlying skin. This is possible because fat freezes at a higher temperature than the skin.
When fat cells freeze, the cellular injury triggers a process (apoptosis) that leads to the permanent elimination of the treated fat cells.
On average, each Coolsculpting cycle results in a 20% reduction of fat in the treated area. Final results are seen three months following the procedure.
Multiple cycles can be administered in the same area to achieve desired results.
Who is a candidate for Coolsculpting?
CoolSculpting is a safe, permanent, non-invasive, and virtually painless way to target unwanted fat. The fat must be under the skin (subcutaneous fat). CoolSculpting is not able to freeze fat in deeper deposits, such as those around abdominal organs. If you can squeeze it, we can freeze it!
The benefits of CoolSculpting include:
- CoolSculpting can diminish areas of excess fat that are resistant to dieting and exercise. It can reduce stubborn fat deposits and help you achieve your body goals.
- CoolSculpting does not require any downtime. You’ll be able to enjoy the results of Coolsculpting with minimal interruption to the normal activities of your life. It is a non-invasive procedure that doesn't require significant recovery post-treatment.
- CoolSculpting is comfortable. Because the intense cold from CoolSculpting numbs the treatment area, the procedure itself is very comfortable.
- CoolSculpting can be performed for fat reduction in just about any area of the body, including the submental area (double chin), back, abdomen, arms, and legs. As CoolSculpting specialists, we’re willing to get creative!
- CoolSculpting results are long-lasting. It is able to permanently destroy fat cells in the targeted area.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?
The technology behind CoolSculpting treatment hinges on one pivotal factor: fat cells are more vulnerable to cold temperatures than skin or muscle cells.
Fat cells that are exposed to low temperatures break down in a process known as cryolipolysis. They freeze at approximately 4°C (39°F), while skin, nerves, and muscle tissue can tolerate much lower temperatures without damage. This differential sensitivity is what makes CoolSculpting possible. The treatment can cool tissue to a temperature that destroys fat cells while preserving all surrounding structures. During the procedure, the CoolSculpting device carefully calibrates the treatment temperature: high enough not to cause damage to the skin and low enough to disintegrate unwanted fat.
When fat cells freeze during a CoolSculpting session, the cellular injury triggers the process of apoptosis, permanently eliminating fat cells in the targeted area. Your body's immune system recognizes these damaged cells and initiates a cleanup process. The contents of the fat cell are metabolized and eliminated through your liver. There's no toxic release, no systemic effects, and no harm to organs. This elimination process takes approximately 8-12 weeks, which is why CoolSculpting results appear gradually rather than immediately.

Our Comprehensive Approach to CoolSculpting
An initial free consultation with one of our CoolSculpting experts is key to planning your CoolSculpting transformation. During your consultation, it’s important to discuss your body goals and the specific areas of fat that trouble you. This will help our team determine how best to achieve your desired fat loss results.
A CoolSculpting treatment takes from one and a half to four hours, depending on the number of areas to be treated. During this time, one of our CoolSculpting experts will apply an applicator with suction. When the treatment begins, you will feel a very cold sensation, and then the area becomes numb. During your treatment, you will be comfortable. You can relax, read or watch television.
Once the treatment is complete, the tissue is massaged to encourage fat elimination. You’re then free to return to your normal daily activities. The treated areas typically feel a little numb and are often slightly swollen for a few days.
Depending on the amount of fat reduction you desire, you may require several CoolSculpting treatments to achieve your desired outcome. Contact us to book a complimentary CoolSculpting consultation with one of our experts so you can understand how CoolSculpting can benefit you.
CoolSculpting Treatment Areas: Targeting Your Problem Zones
One of CoolSculpting's most appealing features is its versatility. You'll be able to target stubborn fat deposits across multiple body areas, creating comprehensive body contouring results.
Abdomen: The abdomen remains the most requested treatment area at Compass Dermatology. Whether it's the lower "pooch" that persists despite the crunches, or the upper abdominal bulge that affects your clothing fit, CoolSculpting effectively reduces belly fat. The average 20%-25% fat reduction per session can flatten your midsection noticeably, making your favourite outfits fit comfortably again.
Flanks (Love Handles): Love handles create the frustrating muffin-top effect, making clothing uncomfortable and affecting your confidence. CoolSculpting has applicators that are specifically designed to target these lateral fat deposits. Patients often treat flanks in combination with the abdomen for comprehensive torso contouring. Results create a smoother silhouette from front to side view.
Double Chin (Submental): The specialized CoolMini applicator targets submental fat, that stubborn double chin that ages your appearance and affects your profile. Before CoolSculpting, surgery was the only permanent solution for this area. Now, you can eliminate your double chin with no downtime. Submental fat can also be effectively eliminated with Belkyra, an injectable treatment that uses deoxycholic acid. This non-surgical option permanently destroys fat cells under the chin, offering another way to address this area.
Inner and Outer Thighs: Thigh fat, particularly inner thigh rubbing and outer thigh saddlebags, frustrates many patients. CoolSculpting reduces these deposits, creating more proportionate legs and reducing chafing. Results become apparent 8-12 weeks post-treatment.
Upper Arms (Bra Fat and Bat Wings): Upper arm fat that jiggles when you wave or creates bulges in short sleeves responds well to CoolSculpting. The treatment slims arms without the lengthy downtime and visible scarring associated with surgical arm lifts.
Back Fat and Bra Rolls: That annoying back fat that creates bulges around your bra band? CoolSculpting can target it. These treatments smooth the back area, making fitted clothing more flattering and increasing comfort.
Male Chest (Pseudogynecomastia): Men struggling with chest fat (when not caused by actual glandular tissue) can achieve flatter, more masculine chest contours with CoolSculpting. This application requires careful assessment by our dermatologists to distinguish between fat deposits and true gynecomastia, which requires surgical intervention.
The CoolSculpting Journey: From Popsicles to Medical Breakthrough
The story of CoolSculpting starts on a playground in the 1970s, when dermatologists noticed children eating popsicles developed cheek dimples from "popsicle panniculitis." This led to a key insight: could cold selectively reduce fat elsewhere in the body?
Decades later, Harvard scientists Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. R. Rox Anderson confirmed that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than skin, nerves, or muscle. Fat freezes at higher temperatures, allowing targeted destruction without harming other tissues.
In 2008, the duo published their findings, coining "cryolipolysis" (fat destruction by cold.) Controlled cooling helps the body get rid of fat cells by destroying them. The body then removes these eliminated cells through the lymphatic system over the course of several months. This non-invasive method permanently removes fat without surgery, anesthesia, or downtime.
At Compass Dermatology, we've witnessed firsthand how this accidental discovery from a popsicle observation has empowered thousands of our patients to achieve body confidence without surgery. That's the power of curiosity-driven scientific research combined with rigorous clinical development.
CoolSculpting vs. Other Fat Reduction Methods: Making the Right Choice
Patients today have a variety of effective fat reduction options at their fingertips. By understanding how CoolSculpting compares, you can make empowered, informed decisions about your body-contouring journey.
CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction
Liposuction remains the gold standard for dramatic fat removal, capable of eliminating larger volumes in a single procedure. However, it requires anesthesia, incisions, drains, compression garments, and significant recovery time.
Can't afford 1-2 weeks away from work?
CoolSculpting offers a non-surgical alternative with zero downtime. While results are more gradual and less dramatic per treatment, many patients achieve their goals without the risks, recovery, and expense of surgery. It may be a better option if you want to spot reduce, but don't need an instant, dramatic transformation.
CoolSculpting vs. Belkyra
For a double chin, both treatments permanently destroy fat cells but work differently. Belkyra uses injections of deoxycholic acid, while CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling. Patient preference often determines choice. Both deliver excellent double chin reduction.
CoolSculpting vs. Diet and Exercise
This comparison deserves addressing directly. It's important to remember that CoolSculpting is NOT a weight loss solution. Nor is it a substitute for healthy living. You cannot out-freeze a poor diet. Exercise and nutrition remain fundamental to overall health and ideal body composition.
CoolSculpting excels at targeting genetically-determined fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Many patients maintain excellent fitness but struggle with stubborn areas, such as the lower belly, love handles, and inner thighs. These areas don't respond to additional exercise or calorie restriction. This is where CoolSculpting shines: eliminating that final layer of fat that prevents you from seeing your hard-earned results.
The ideal approach combines a healthy lifestyle with strategic CoolSculpting to refine areas that genetics make resistant to conventional fat loss methods.
Maximizing Your CoolSculpting Results: Expert Tips
CoolSculpting delivers excellent results on its own, but certain things can optimize outcomes and help achieve your goals faster.
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water before and after CoolSculpting supports your lymphatic system's elimination of destroyed fat cells.
- Maintain Gentle Activity: While intense exercise isn't necessary immediately post-treatment, light activity like walking encourages lymphatic drainage and circulation. Many patients resume normal workout routines the next day without issues.
- Consider Lymphatic Massage: Some patients benefit from professional lymphatic drainage massage 1-2 weeks post-treatment. This specialized massage technique encourages your body's natural elimination of treated fat cells.
- Combine Treatment Areas Strategically: Rather than treating one area repeatedly, many patients achieve better overall results by addressing multiple problem areas in sequence. For example, treating the abdomen and flanks creates a more balanced torso contour than focusing solely on belly fat.
- Time Treatments Appropriately: Planning CoolSculpting 3-4 months before your goal date (beach vacation, wedding, reunion) ensures results fully develop when you want them most. That's why many patients schedule winter treatments for a summer reveal.
- Maintain Stable Weight: While CoolSculpting permanently eliminates treated fat cells, significant weight gain will enlarge remaining fat cells. Maintain a stable weight within 5-10 pounds of your treatment weight for long-lasting results.
- Consider Combination Treatments: At Compass Dermatology, we often combine CoolSculpting with complementary procedures. Skin tightening treatments like Ultherapy address any mild laxity after fat reduction. We can design comprehensive facial and body contouring protocols that leverage multiple technologies for optimal transformation.

Your CoolSculpting Timeline
Weeks Before Treatment: Your Complimentary Consultation
Your transformation begins with a consultation with one of our laser aestheticians at Compass Dermatology. During this appointment, we'll assess your trouble areas, discuss your body goals, and create a customized treatment plan. We'll pinpoint exactly which areas require treatment and estimate how many cycles you'll need. The "pinch test" helps determine if you have adequate subcutaneous fat for treatment. If you can pinch some fat, you may be a good candidate.
Treatment Day: What to Expect
You'll feel intense cold for the first 5-10 minutes as the applicator begins working, then the area becomes numb. Most patients read, work on laptops, watch shows, or relax during treatment. To maximize your comfort, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing. After the applicator is removed, post-treatment massage begins. This significantly improves results by breaking up frozen fat cells more effectively.
Days 1-3: Initial Response
The treated area may feel numb, tingly, or slightly sore, similar to post-workout muscle soreness. Some patients experience temporary redness or firmness.
Weeks 1-8: Changes Emerge
For the first couple of weeks, your body actively processes destroyed fat cells through your lymphatic system. Some patients notice clothing fitting slightly looser, but dramatic changes haven't yet appeared. Around week 3-4, you'll start noticing a visible reduction. The treated area appears smaller, clothing fits better, and your silhouette looks more contoured. These changes continue to develop.
Weeks 8-12: Peak Results
Maximum results emerge 2-3 months post-treatment. The treated area shows noticeable reduction, and your body's new contours are fully apparent.
Beyond 3 Months: Maintaining Results
Since CoolSculpting permanently destroys treated fat cells, results last indefinitely with stable weight. However, any fat cells that remain in the treated area(s) can still enlarge if you gain significant weight. Most patients find their CoolSculpting results motivate healthier lifestyle choices.
