Your Summer Skin Protection Reminder
I Like Sunburns, Wrinkles & Skin Cancer (Said No One Ever)
Warm weather and sunny days are finally returning to Canada… and with it, our annual reminder to take care with your skin this season. Harmful UV radiation is at its most potent during the summer months—and the damage it does can last a lifetime.
Here are the top three ways you can protect your skin from sun damage:
- Avoid the sun and seek shade, especially during peak sun hours.
- Use sun-protective clothing and accessories like hats, umbrellas, and long sleeves.
- Apply sunscreen regularly whenever you’ll be exposed to sunlight.
When you’re not safely enjoying the weather outside, it’s important to check your skin regularly for new or changing lesions. We recommend doing a skin check self-exam once a month. To help you remember the warning signs, use the ABCDE’s of melanoma:
- A. Is it asymmetrical?
- B. Are the borders inconsistent or irregular?
- C. Does the spot contain multiple colours?
- D. What is the diameter? Is it more than 6mm?
- E. Has there been any evolution (change)?
If you find yourself answering “yes” to any of these questions, especially if there is significant change in the lesion from month to month, remember to bring your concerns to your doctor.* The good news is that skin cancer, including melanoma, is highly treatable when addressed early, so make time to check yourself.
In the meantime, we hope you have a lovely—and safe—summer season! And if you have other questions or concerns about your skin, feel free to come in for a consultation or read up on sun damage on our website.
