Check Yourself to Protect Yourself

53% of melanomas are found by patients themselves—another 17% are found by family members. Don’t brush off an irregular mole or spot. Be inspired this Melanoma Monday to take control of your skin with these three tips:

1. If you see something, say something. Knowing how to tell the difference between a benign mole and a potentially dangerous one could save you or someone you love. Learn to recognize suspicious skin spots with our easy guide.
2. Cover up. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing—and not just when you’re at the cottage. Sunscreen should be applied daily for protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, premature aging (we’ll pass on the wrinkles), and cancers like melanoma.
3. Stop tanning indoors. The days of tin foil and baby oil are over. It's time to ditch the tanning booths, too. According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, you’re more likely to develop melanoma from indoor tanning than you are from natural sunlight.

It’s always better to be on the safe side. If you think a spot looks unusual, see your family physician or obtain a referral to Compass Dermatology. One of our board-certified dermatologists can do a complete skin check and put you at ease.

Our blog is dedicated to all the latest news from Compass Dermatology, a boutique dermatology clinic located in Toronto.
