What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal HA fillers are one of the most powerful tools that dermatologists use to make aesthetic changes to the face. They contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar that binds water and holds it in the skin. As we age, our skin produces less hyaluronic acid, resulting in less hydrated, thinner skin with fine lines, wrinkles, and folds.

Injectable fillers may be used to replace and enhance the hyaluronic acid in your skin, resulting in plump, hydrated skin with improved volume and fewer lines and folds. The results are evident immediately following your treatment and are long-lasting. While there is the risk of bruising due to the injection of facial fillers, there is typically minimal recovery time. Our dermatologists will evaluate your overall aesthetic goals and devise a holistic plan for natural rejuvenation.

Who is a Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Due to their safety and ability to address many signs of aging, most patients are candidates for facial fillers. Whether you're male or female, in your 20s or 70s, dermal fillers can be used to correct volume loss and enhance your facial features and proportions. As they replace lost volume, fillers improve the appearance of fine lines and even more severe wrinkles like deep nasolabial folds.

A dermal filler is able to achieve dramatic results, however in some cases other options, including a surgical procedure, may be more suitable.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Dermal Fillers

At Compass Dermatology, our goal is to provide our patients with natural results. Hyaluronic acid facial fillers are incredible tools that can replace lost volume in soft tissue, provide lift, and reduce lines and facial folds, but if an injector is chasing lines without considering proper facial proportions, the results will be unnatural and unattractive. During your cosmetic consultation, our dermatologists will assess your facial features and discuss your cosmetic goals before planning a customized treatment.

If you are considering dermal fillers, Toronto has many options. Compass Dermatology has the skill and experience to use an injectable filler to give you a more youthful appearance while providing you with the highest level of care.

Dermal Fillers FAQ

How long do dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers last between 6-18 months, depending on the product used and the location of the injections.

What is in a dermal filler?

Dermal fillers (also called soft tissue fillers) are soft injectable gels that contain bio-compatible hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in your skin. The hyaluronic acid found in dermal fillers is manufactured in a lab and is not from an animal source. They are called dermal fillers because the hyaluronic acid naturally increases moisture, restoring volume to your skin.

Several companies make dermal fillers. We use Juvederm, Belotero, Restylane, and Teosyal fillers.

What are dermal fillers used for?

In the aging process, our skin produces less hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. With time, this results in wrinkles (smile lines, frown lines, crow's feet, vertical lip lines, marionette lines, etc.).

Dermal fillers are used to add volume to treat fine lines and even deep lines and wrinkles by filling out sagging skin, enhancing facial contours, and restoring a smoother, more natural look. They can also be used as a lip filler to give more volume to thin lips and other areas of the body such as the hands, feet, and neck.

The benefits of an injectable treatment of hyaluronic acid dermal filler is that it can be done quickly, with little or no downtime, causes only mild discomfort, and gives immediate results -- even in the case of deep wrinkles. Moreover, dermal filler cost is only a fraction of that of a surgical procedure.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the risk of bruising?

We recommend that patients getting facial filler to avoid aspirin (unless you have been advised to take a daily aspirin by another physician) and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen, for 7-14 days prior to their treatment if possible. Avoid alcohol within 24 hours of your dermal filler procedure.

If you do experience mild bruising, it should resolve within 1-2 weeks.

How soon are the results of dermal filler injections seen?

Improvements due to injections of dermal filler are visible immediately following your treatment. Mild swelling and occasional bruising may result from filler injections and can take up to 2 weeks to subside. Final results can be assessed at two weeks.

Can fillers make you look younger and more refreshed?

Yes, dermal fillers can restore a more youthful appearance and make you appear refreshed by improving common signs of aging such as volume loss, fine lines, severe facial wrinkles, and folds.

How much do dermal fillers cost?

The cost for injectable fillers like Juvederm dermal fillers depends upon several factors.
For one thing, it matters where you go. If you are looking for dermal fillers, Toronto has many places that offer dermal filler treatment. You should look for a clinic that uses the best dermal fillers and has a highly-trained, professional staff.

Hyaluronic acid dermal filler cost also depends upon which areas of the face are treated and how much filler is needed. You will need to schedule an initial consultation with a provider to get an accurate price.

Are dermal fillers safe?

When performed by qualified providers at a reputable clinic, dermal fillers are a very safe way to improve the look of lines and wrinkles. Injectable fillers even include numbing agents to minimize discomfort.
