BroadBand Light BBL Toronto

BroadBand Light — The World’s Most Powerful BBL Device

BBL HERO (High Energy Rapid Output) is a revolutionary technology and the world’s most powerful BroadBand Light device. Compass Dermatology is proud to be one of the first clinics in Canada to offer it.

What is Broad Band Light (BBL)?

With aging and years of sun exposure, many people develop brown spots, redness, broken blood vessels, fine lines and wrinkles. Broad band light (BBL) uses high intensity light to produce a more even skin tone. The energy delivered by BBL also gently heats the upper layers of the skin, stimulating the production of new collagen. BBL can also be used for the treatment of acne and rosacea.

The consistent, high-power delivery of our technology ensures uniform treatment across your entire face or body. This precision translates to more predictable results and better patient satisfaction.

Broadband light utilizes multiple wavelengths of light to treat brown spots, broken blood vessels, and rosacea. BBL also stimulates collagen and improves skin texture. Almost any area can be treated, including the face, neck, arms, legs, and chest.

Who is a Good Candidate for treatment with BBL?

The best candidates for BBL treatment are skin types 1-4 and have uneven pigmentation (freckles and sun spots), redness, and broken blood vessels.

4 Times Faster

Traditional light treatments deliver energy slowly, requiring multiple passes over treatment areas and extended appointment times. BBL HERO revolutionizes this process with high-energy rapid output technology, treating areas four-times faster than previous systems.

Enhanced Comfort and Safety

BBL HERO's rapid treatment minimizes heat buildup in skin, reducing discomfort significantly. The advanced sapphire cooling system keeps skin temperature controlled throughout your session.

Treating Larger Areas

The efficiency of BBL HERO makes treating larger body areas, like the arms, legs, back, and chest, practical and comfortable. You can now address sun damage comprehensively across multiple body areas in a single appointment.

How Does BBL Work?

BBL is a type of light technology that is more advanced and powerful. BBL hand pieces are equipped with state-of-the-art cooling features, enabling the comfortable and safe delivery of high-powered energy.

BBL works by delivering broad-spectrum light to the skin. The energy is absorbed by the brown pigment (melanin) and the hemoglobin in blood vessels that contributes to redness, and the pigment and hemoglobin are eliminated.

The heat from the light energy also helps stimulate collagen production, thereby smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles.

BBL therapy is a significant advancement in light-based skin rejuvenation. Unlike traditional IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments, BBL technology delivers precisely controlled light energy across multiple wavelengths, allowing us to customize treatments for your unique skin concerns.

How BBL Differs from Traditional IPL: While both BBL and IPL use light energy to treat skin concerns, Sciton's BroadBand Light technology offers superior precision and power. The BBL HERO system at Compass Dermatology features advanced cooling technology, making treatments more comfortable while delivering higher energy levels safely. This translates to better results with less discomfort.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Sciton BBL Treatment

At Compass Dermatology, you’ll start with a consultation with one of our expert laser esthetician’s and a board-certified dermatologist. If you are a good candidate for BBL, a course of 4 monthly treatments will typically be recommended.

Tanned skin cannot be treated with BBL. Apply sunscreen daily and also avoid self-tanners and spray tans prior to your treatment. Discontinue skin care products with active ingredients (including retinol, tretinoin, glycolic acid, salicyclic acid) seven days prior to your appointment and avoid chemical peels for three weeks. If you have a history of cold sores, consider starting an antiviral medication the day prior to your treatment.

Before your treatment begins, your skin will be cleansed and a clear gel will be applied to the areas to be treated. Your eyes will be protected with metal eye shields. BBL treatment is not painful, but there can be a slightly uncomfortable sensation of warmth or a feeling similar to the snap of a rubber band against your skin. BBL Hero is equipped with advanced cooling features, increasing the comfort of the treatment.

Following your treatment, your skin will feel warm and will be slightly red. Some patients develop mild to moderate swelling for a few days, which is often most evident around the eyes. A non-sedating antihistamine often helps to diminish this. Brown spots typically appear darker following your treatment, and then lift off over the following week. You are able to apply sunscreen and makeup immediately following your treatment and can return to your regular activities. Avoid active ingredients for one week following BBL and be sure to avoid scrubbing or picking any flaking skin.

Most patients require 4 BBL sessions to achieve their desired results. Sessions last approximately 30-60 minutes, depending on the areas being treated, and are scheduled at four week intervals.

The Science of Light Energy

BroadBand Light works by emitting specific wavelengths that target melanin, the pigment responsible for colouration in your skin. This brown pigment, which is found in age spots and sun damage, absorbs specific wavelengths of light, while hemoglobin in broken blood vessels and redness responds to others. When melanin absorb the light energy, they heat up and break apart, allowing your body to eliminate them naturally.

Beyond targeting visible concerns, BBL therapy penetrates the deeper layers of skin, stimulating fibroblasts, which are the cells responsible for collagen production. It effectively addresses existing damage while actively preventing future aging, establishing it as the perfect foundation for more advanced skin rejuvenation therapies.

Compass Dermatology offers Forever Young BBL, a specific treatment protocol that has been scientifically shown to change gene expression in skin cells, literally making aged skin behave like younger skin. Studies from Stanford University demonstrated that regular BBL treatments can reverse the aging process at a cellular level—a breakthrough in aesthetic dermatology.

BBL Treatment Areas: Comprehensive Skin Rejuvenation

One of BroadBand Light's most appealing advantages is its versatility, as it can rejuvenate virtually any area of your body showing signs of sun damage, aging, or vascular concerns.

Face and Neck: The most popular BBL treatment area, facial rejuvenation, addresses sun spots, freckles, redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, and fine lines. The neck, often revealing age through sun damage and texture changes, responds beautifully.

Décolletage and Chest: Our patients frequently request BBL for chest rejuvenation. Years of sun exposure create freckles, brown spots, and uneven texture across the décolletage. BBL effectively reverses this damage.

Hands: Your hands tell stories your face never will, especially stories about sun exposure. BBL treatment for hands eliminates age spots and improves skin texture, making hands appear years younger. Many patients combine BBL with dermal filler treatments for comprehensive hand rejuvenation.

Arms and Legs: Sun damage doesn't discriminate. It appears wherever skin sees daylight. BroadBand Light treatments address brown spots and vascular lesions on arms and legs, creating a more uniform skin tone. The large treatment area of BBL HERO makes body treatments faster than ever, with the same effectiveness as a facial treatment.

Back and Shoulders: Forgotten areas like the upper back and shoulders often show significant sun damage. BBL effectively treats these areas.

During your consultation, we'll discuss which areas would benefit most from BBL treatment so that you can receive a customized treatment plan that aligns with your aesthetic goals and lifestyle.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

Immediately After Treatment
Your skin will most likely be pink or red. This typically resolves within a few hours. Treated brown spots may darken immediately, as this is expected and desired.

Days 1-7: The Clearing Phase
Darkened brown spots will remain more prominent for 3-5 days before flaking off naturally. Redness in treated vascular lesions fades gradually. Resist the urge to pick or scrub. Let your skin shed naturally. Continue your regular skincare routine, avoiding active ingredients like retinol for one week.

Days 7-14: Initial Results Emerge
By week two, you'll notice clearer, more even-toned skin. Brown spots have lifted away, redness has diminished, and your complexion appears brighter and more refreshed.

Weeks 4-12: Continued Improvement
BBL's collagen-stimulating effects continue working beneath the surface. Skin texture improves, fine lines soften, and your overall skin quality enhances progressively. Each subsequent BBL treatment (typically scheduled 4 weeks apart) builds upon previous results.

Maintenance Phase
After completing your initial series of 4-6 BBL treatments, most patients maintain their results with 1-2 sessions per year. Consistent sun protection maximizes the longevity of your BBL results. Many Compass Dermatology patients incorporate BBL into their annual skincare routine, treating seasonally to combat cumulative sun damage.

The Forever Young BBL Protocol

For patients committed to long-term skin health, the Forever Young BBL protocol involves regular treatments (typically 2-4 times yearly) to maintain gene expression changes that keep skin functioning in a more youthful state. This preventative approach represents the cutting edge of anti-aging dermatology. We can customize treatments for virtually any pigment or vascular concern.

BBL for Sun Damage and Age Spots
Repeated sun exposure contributes to cumulative UV damage that manifests as brown spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation. BBL treatment specifically targets melanin, breaking apart pigmented lesions while leaving surrounding skin untouched. Most patients see dramatic improvement in sun damage after 2-3 BBL sessions.

BBL for Rosacea
Living with rosacea means managing persistent facial redness and visible blood vessels. BroadBand Light therapy targets the hemoglobin in dilated blood vessels, which causes them to collapse and fade. Many patients with rosacea find that BBL significantly reduces baseline redness and decreases flare-up frequency. While BBL doesn't cure rosacea, it effectively manages its visible features.

BBL for Active Acne
The blue light wavelengths available with BBL technology target P. acnes bacteria, reducing inflammatory acne breakouts. BBL's anti-inflammatory effects also calm existing lesions. Many of our patients combine BBL with other acne treatments for comprehensive management.
