Sculptra® Poly-L-Lactic Acid Toronto

Collagen-stimulating Poly-L-Lactic Acid Injectable

As we age, collagen production in the skin decreases, contributing to the appearance of facial wrinkles and folds. In fact, by the time you're 45 years old, you may have lost 25% of your collagen! Poly-L-Lactic Acid kickstarts the regenerative power of your skin. It stimulates your body to replace lost collagen, gradually restoring a youthful fullness to your face that always looks natural and can last up to two years. Poly-L-Lactic Acid can be also be used to decrease skin laxity and wrinkles on the neck, chest, abdomen, arms, and legs.

What is Sculptra Poly-L-Lactic Acid?

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible substance that stimulates collagen production. Poly-L-lactic acid is biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) and has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants, and other types of implants.

As with all cosmetic injectable treatments at Compass Dermatology, only our experienced board-certified dermatologists perform Poly-L-Lactic Acid treatments.

Our board-certified dermatologists are top Poly-L-Lactic Acid injectors in Toronto. Poly-L-Lactic Acid is not a traditional facial filler, your results develop gradually following the treatment as your own collagen production increases. Our dermatologists inject in many different areas of the face for an enhanced appearance that respects your natural features.

Why Sculptra Could Be a Good Choice for You

Poly-L-Lactic Acid is an injectable treatment that restores the youthful volume of your face.

  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid results are long lasting.
  • Results can last up to two years.
  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid gives patients the ability to achieve remarkably subtle and natural-looking results.
  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid injections always provide natural results because your own collagen is stimulated to naturally replace lost volume.

However, if you’re looking for immediate results, Poly-L-Lactic Acid is not for you. It takes weeks to months for your body to produce its own collagen. Results appear gradually but are very natural and can last up to 2 years!

How Does Poly-L-Lactic Acid Work?

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is biocompatible and biodegradable.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid is deposited below the surface of the skin where it stimulates collagen production and gradually increases the thickness of the skin.

Visible results appear within 6 to 12 weeks.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid is one of the longest lasting injectables for facial rejuvenation. It has an FDA approval of two years, but likely lasts up to 3 years due to the new collagen that has formed. However, the face will continue to age and collagen will continue to break down.

Most people have a series of 3 treatments to achieve optimal results, with maintenance treatments every one to two years.

Treatment results will differ for each person. In a clinical study, results lasted for up to 2 years after the first treatment session in most patients. Touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Sculptra

With advanced injection techniques, Poly-L-Lactic Acid can lift and reshape the face, create volume and improve the tone and texture of the skin. This makes it a versatile product for full facial rejuvenation. Since Poly-L-Lactic Acid requires special preparation and a very advanced injection technique, the best Poly-L-Lactic Acid doctors are those who have extensive experience injecting the product.

Our board-certified dermatologists are world renowned for their expertise in performing this treatment and have become recognized as Poly-L-Lactic Acid experts!

One of our dermatologists will answer all of your questions and prepare you for the treatment. Here is a list of what to expect:

  • Makeup should be removed prior to treatment.
  • The area where the injections will be administered will be cleaned.
  • As with all injections, you will feel some discomfort during the treatment. Poly-L-Lactic Acid is mixed with a small amount of local anesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable.
  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid will be injected in small amounts into the skin using a very fine needle or microcannula. Multiple injections will be needed.

Once the injections are completed, an ice pack will be applied to the treated area to help reduce swelling. The area will be thoroughly massaged to distribute the product evenly.

Most patients feel comfortable going back to their normal activities following treatment.

Immediately following a treatment session with Poly-L-Lactic Acid, there may be redness, swelling, pain, and/or bruising of the treatment area. These signs usually resolve in a few hours to a few days.

Our staff will give you specific post-treatment care instructions. You should massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times per day for 5 days following your treatment. Within the first 24 hours after treatment, an ice pack may be applied for 10 to 15 minutes at a time to the treatment area to help reduce swelling. Wrap the ice pack in a damp cloth and avoid putting ice directly on your skin.

One of the things our patients love most about Poly-L-Lactic Acid is the added benefit of improved skin quality. Following Poly-L-Lactic Acid, your skin will feel firmer, smoother, and appear more radiant!

Combining Sculptra with Other Aesthetic Treatments

Sculptra's greatest power often emerges when strategically combined with complementary treatments, creating comprehensive rejuvenation that addresses multiple aging concerns simultaneously.

Sculptra + Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: The Perfect Partnership

Many dermatologists employ a "foundation and finish" approach: Sculptra provides deep, widespread volume restoration serving as the foundation, while HA fillers provide precise, immediate correction of specific features. For instance:

  • Sculptra for overall cheek volume, temple hollowing, and facial foundation
  • HA fillers for lips, tear troughs, and fine-tuning specific areas requiring immediate correction.

This combination delivers both immediate gratification (from HA) and long-term, natural-looking volume (from Sculptra).

Sculptra + Laser Resurfacing

Sculptra addresses volume and deep structural support, while lasers like Halo, Profractional, or MOXI improve skin quality, texture, and pigmentation. Typically, Sculptra is initiated first to build the structural foundation, followed by laser treatments to refine surface quality.

Sculptra + Ultherapy or RF Microneedling

Combining Sculptra with skin tightening technologies addresses both volume loss and skin laxity, the two primary components of facial aging. Ultherapy or Sylfirm X RF Microneedling tightens loose skin while Sculptra rebuilds lost volume. The synergistic effect creates lifting AND volumization.

Sculptra + Botox

Botox addresses dynamic wrinkles from muscle movement and Sculptra restores volume.

Sculptra vs. Traditional Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?

Traditional hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers work as volumizers, which means that they physically occupy space beneath the skin, lifting tissues through their gel-like presence. When HA filler is injected into your skin, that filler remains where placed, providing immediate structural support and volume. You'll see an improvement as soon as your treatment is finished (although optimal results appear a bit later).

Sculptra works in a completely different way. Rather than providing volume through its physical presence, the primary ingredient in Sculptra, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), acts as a biostimulator instead. The PLLA microparticles don't remain as permanent volume; instead, they trigger a controlled response in your skin that stimulates your own fibroblasts to produce new collagen over several months. The PLLA itself eventually degrades and is harmlessly absorbed by your body, but the collagen it stimulated remains.

This fundamental difference shapes everything: treatment timeline, injection technique, results progression, and longevity.

It's All About Gradual Transformation
After a Sculptra treatment, you won't see dramatic immediate volume. Over the following weeks and months, your body responds to the PLLA by creating new collagen. The volumization builds progressively, creating results that emerge naturally rather than appearing suddenly. This gradual progression is precisely why Sculptra results look so natural.

Distribution and Integration Patterns
Traditional fillers are applied in specific layers of the skin. The filler basically remains where it was injected, providing targeted lift and volume in precise areas like the tear trough, nasolabial folds, or lips.

On the other hand, Sculptra is injected more diffusely throughout the deep skin layers and even slightly below using a fanning or threading technique. The PLLA microparticles distribute throughout tissues, stimulating widespread collagen production rather than creating localized deposits. This distributed approach creates more comprehensive, natural-appearing volumization that integrates with your facial structure rather than simply enhancing specific points.

Why Sculptra Lasts Longer
Did you know that Sculptra's results can persist for 2 years or even longer? This longevity stems from the fundamental difference in mechanism. HA fillers are gradually metabolized by your body (with a naturally occurring enzyme called hyaluronidase). Sculptra, by contrast, stimulates your body to produce its own collagen. Once that collagen forms, it behaves like your natural collagen.
It lasts far longer than injected hyaluronic acid. While collagen does eventually degrade through normal aging processes, the timeline can be measured in years rather than months.

The Art of Advanced Injection Technique
Sculptra demands a more sophisticated injection technique than traditional fillers, which is why experience matters significantly. The product must be properly reconstituted, injected deeply using specific techniques, and requires a thorough post-injection massage. Like other injectable treatments, it also requires a sophisticated understanding of facial anatomy to achieve natural results. Our board-certified dermatologists possess extensive injection experience. They understand the delicate balance between creating beautiful volume restoration and maintaining your natural facial characteristics, ensuring results that enhance rather than transform your appearance.
