What is TCA CROSS?

TCA CROSS is the use of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for the Chemical Reconstruction Of Skin Scars (CROSS). It is most commonly used to fill-in deep icepick and pitted acne scars prior to laser resurfacing.

TCA CROSS is often combined with subcision, which releases the downward pull that surrounding skin may have on acne scars, punch excision of large, deep acne scars, and filler injection to further smooth the skin and stimulate collagen production.

Who is a Candidate for TCA CROSS?

TCA CROSS can be used to reduce the depth of ice pick and pitted scars in patients of any skin type. The risk of pigment change (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation) is higher in patients with darker skin types.

How does TCA CROSS work?

When TCA is placed within icepick or pitted acne scars it stimulates the formation of collagen which reduces the depth of the scars.

Final results are seen 3 months following your last treatment.

Our Comprehensive Approach to TCA CROSS

You will first be assessed by one of our board-certified dermatologists to determine if you are a good candidate for TCA CROSS.

Prior to your treatment, your skin will be cleansed. TCA will be deposited at the base of the icepick or pitted scars using a toothpick. The treatment is associated with mild stinging for a few minutes.

Following your treatment, the edges of the scars will appear white or ‘frosted’. This white appearance will persist for about 12 hours, and then the treated areas will become red and crusted for about one week. During this time you are able to cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser and apply a healing cream or ointment and mineral sunscreen. Sunscreen is very important to reduce the risk of pigment change. A cream with hydroquinone may also be recommended to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.

Most patients require 3-6 monthly treatments for significant improvement.
