Neuromodulators/Wrinkle Smoothing Injectables

Aging is something we embrace, but on our own terms. We want how we feel on the inside to be reflected in our outward appearance, and we know you do, too. Neuromodulators (which are known by the brand name Botox, among others, in Canada) are non-invasive injections that improve the signs of aging with no recovery time and natural-looking results.

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is a highly purified protein isolated from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Compass Dermatology’s expert dermatologists inject it directly into specific facial muscles, after which neuromodulators cleave a protein on nerve endings, preventing the release of the chemical which signals muscles to contract. The effect of Botox injections peaks at two weeks and then gradually wears off as the nerve endings regenerate the cleaved protein.

At Compass Dermatology, all Botox injections are performed by our experienced, board-certified dermatologists. Prior to your treatment, Dr. Cook or Dr. Carroll will carefully assess your facial anatomy and movement to determine the correct dosage and injection locations.

Why Neuromodulators Could Be a Good Choice for You

Neuromodulators administered by Compass Dermatology’s physicians are able to significantly improve dynamic wrinkles of the face and neck within weeks. Dynamic wrinkles are facial lines and creases that are due to repeated facial expressions, such as furrowing your brows or raising your eyebrows. As your skin slowly loses elasticity with aging, wrinkles form from the repeated movement.

They often appear in your late 20s and deepen as the years pass. Botox treatments at Compass Dermatology reduce the movement of the muscles responsible for these wrinkles, and the lines gradually soften, leaving you with a rested and refreshed appearance.

The goal for a natural look is to soften facial wrinkles for smoother skin, not create a completely frozen, expressionless appearance. Our board-certified dermatologists at Compass Dermatology in Toronto will customize your treatment to achieve your goals.

Compass Dermatology’s experienced doctors also know how to use Botox to shape and contour the face. Botox injection into the muscles that pull the brows down weakens the action of these muscles and results in a non-surgical brow lift. This principle can also be used to lift the corners of the mouth and sharpen the jawline. Botox injection into the masseter muscles at the angles of the jaw can reduce the bulk of these muscles and slim the jawline. Botox treatment is also able to soften lines above the upper lip, smooth out chin dimples, and lower the upper lip to improve the appearance of a “gummy” smile.

Another benefit of neuromodulators? Not only do they treat facial wrinkles to make you look better—they make you feel better, too. The mood-boosting benefits of Botox are well documented, and neuromodulator treatment at Compass Dermatology can also help ease tension headaches and reduce jaw pain.

You will see the full effect of your Botox treatment by the end of week 2. Most people require treatment every 3 to 4 months.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Neuromodulator Injections

Patients new to Compass Dermatology will meet with one of our board certified dermatologists for an initial consultation and skin assessment to determine the optimal approach to achieving your aesthetic goals by treating lines and wrinkles.

Once the consultation is complete and neuromodulators are deemed appropriate for you, your cosmetic treatment will begin. A botox injection is performed with a tiny needle and may cause minimal discomfort. Your appointment at Compass Dermatology’s clinic will take about 30 minutes and no recovery time is needed. Side effects may include bruising and there is a very low risk of mild drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid which resolves over several weeks.

Important Information for a Successful Botox Treatment

Botox treatment is a non-surgical procedure that, when performed by the trained professionals at Compass Dermatology, is safe and effective in reducing the appearance of deep frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, and other facial wrinkles. You may, however, experience minor side effects like swelling and bruising around the injection site. To minimize your chances of experiencing these or other issues, here are some best practices to keep in mind:

  • Avoid lying down, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treatment area for 4-5 hours after you receive your Botox injection. It isn’t necessary to try to avoid moving your face, however. Feel free to smile, laugh, and make other facial expressions as you normally would.
  • Avoid anything that might thin your blood. You might know that alcohol, for instance, acts as a blood thinner. Compass Dermatology recommends not drinking beer, wine, or other alcoholic drinks from one day before your Botox treatment and for 24 hours afterward.
  • Note that aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (and other NSAIDs) are all blood thinners as well and should be avoided for 7-10 days prior to your Botox injection at Compass Dermatology’s clinic. If you need to take something for pain relief during this time, use Tylenol. It isn’t an NSAID and doesn’t have the same thinning effect.
  • You might be wondering about prescription drugs that thin your blood. If you are taking any prescription blood thinning medications, talk to your doctor about whether you can pause your medications for your Botox treatment.
  • Compass Dermatology recommends avoiding intense exercise for the remainder of the day post injection. Why? Exercise raises your blood pressure, which can contribute to both swelling and bruising. So give yourself permission to take a day off from your workout routine.

Botox FAQ

Compass Dermatology recommends beginning regular Botox treatments once facial lines are visible at rest. Beginning early will help to delay the formation of deep wrinkles due to the movement of facial muscles.

According to Health Canada, the only people who should be providing Botox® treatments and dermal fillers in Canada are licensed medical physicians or registered nurses with the necessary training on safely and effectively administering this treatment. All Botox treatments at Compass Dermatology are administered by our licensed, trained, and experienced physicians.
