What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to exfoliate the superficial layer of dead skin cells and reveal a smooth, glowing complexion. Microdermabrasion is painless and also allows for better absorption of products that you apply to treated areas.
Microdermabrasion leaves you with tighter, firmer skin by means of promoting new cell growth and is virtually painless with zero downtime.
Who is a Good Candidate for Microdermabrasion?
People of all skin types are candidates for microdermabrasion and it can be performed at any time of the year.
You will benefit from microdermabrasion if you:
- Want to minimize the appearance of fine lines.
- Want to rejuvenate dull skin.
- Have enlarged pores or blackheads.
- Have uneven skin tone or texture.
How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
During this procedure, a handheld device is used to clear away the very outermost layer of your skin. The device uses the exfoliating properties of fine crystals, which essentially buff or polish the superficial skin layer.
The skin that’s revealed by this procedure will be healthier, clearer, and reinvigorated.
This mechanical exfoliation technique boosts circulation at the same time, improving the radiance of your skin. Your skin will glow after your treatment!
Microdermabrasion is able to generate subtle results, so it’s often used as part of a larger and broader aesthetic treatment program. How microdermabrasion fits into your regimen will vary from patient to patient, depending on your specific needs.
For complexion improvement and maintenance, a series of sessions may be recommended. Sessions are typically spaced about two weeks apart. You'll see an immediate improvement in the clarity of your skin. This truly is a walk-in, walk-out skin beautifying treatment. Walk in with dull, dehydrated skin that shows the wear and tear of age. Walk out with hydrated, smoother and glowing skin.
Our Comprehensive Approach to Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is able to achieve a subtle transformation of the skin. For some of our patients, this is precisely the goal. Other patients may see microdermabrasion as part of a more comprehensive program to address their aging concerns.
As dermatologists, we’re trained to look at the totality of your health, evaluating results in the context of your features, your wellness, and your age. Because of this approach, we can ensure your aesthetic enhancement looks natural and individualized — each and every result is unique to you.
Microdermabrasion is a relatively fast and convenient aesthetic procedure. Most microdermabrasion sessions can be completed in less than sixty minutes. No anesthesia or preparation on the part of the patient is required. You simply come in, sit down in a reclining chair, and enjoy your appointment.
During your session, a small microdermabrasion device, called a handpiece, will be placed against your skin. This instrument creates a small amount of controlled friction. This agitation gently exfoliates your skin while clearing away damaged or aging skin cells. The process exposes a fresh and new layer of skin and cleanses congested pores.
Once your procedure is complete, you should refrain from using skincare products with active ingredients such as glycolic acid and retinol for one week. As always, daily sunscreen is a must. Our dermatologists can customize a skincare regimen you can follow at home to protect your skin and maintain your results.
Microdermabrasion FAQ
Results can last for about a month or so, until the skin renews itself. That's why a series of sessions is recommended to achieve results, and maintenance sessions can be performed.
Microdermabrasion can improve a number of complexion issues, including:
- enlarged pores
- dullness
- rough textures
- fine lines
- hyperpigmentation
- control acne breakouts
- improves radiance
It depends on what you'd like to achieve. A series of sessions is typically needed to achieve results. An average of 6-10 sessions is recommended. Many of our patients will have a single treatment before a special event to instantly achieve smooth, glowing skin.
One session usually takes about 30 minutes or so.
The face can be slightly pinkish or reddish after microdermabrasion. This is common and should subside within a few hours.
Microdermabrasion isn't painful because it only targets the most superficial layers of the skin. Patients tolerate the procedure well and don't usually require numbing cream or anesthesia.
While microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of fine lines, it isn't considered effective in the treatment of deeper lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
